Consultancy

In the industrial world people like to rely on technique. In most situations the damage of not properly working technique is big and in a lot of cases huge. To prevent damage you need good equipment and excellent maintenance. The basic of wireless technique is simple, and in most cases plug&play, but tot get a real reliable network you should understand the technology. So specialist knowledge is vital to achieve this goal.

For this purpose we have wireless network consultants knowing the demands of the process industry and who can support the customer during the project. The following project phases can be distinguished:

  • Feasibility Study
  • Drafting Request for Quotation
  • Drafting Training Program
  • Evaluate and give technical advise on the received quotations
  • Investigate the offered technology including checking compatibility risks
  • Technical design
  • Technical support during the implementation of the network, the security and performance measurements
  • Guarding and registration of the results, defining acceptance tests and drafting the test protocols
  • Drafting company, user and maintenance instructions
  • Checking supplied documents

Field Survey

A field survey can be performed for a number of reasons. Maybe you would like to implement a wireless network, additional to an existing wireless network and which could result in interference. Or maybe you would like to know the performance of the existing network and would like to extend that. Or you would like to increase the performance of your network. But even when you have no wireless network yet it doesn’t mean your new network won’t be interfered with by disturbance source. In all cases there are two basic technical reasons:

  • Get information about all sources of disturbances. Who are they, where are they, what impact have they, how can I lower their impact? In an industrial environment there are lots of special disturbances. An example is a wireless I/O system.
  • Get information about obstacles. It is quiet easy to determine the impact of a metal cabinet in an office or a separation wall. They have been measured many times so their effects can be calculated upfront and put in a simulation model. In a industrial environment there is a lot of metal used to construct the plant itself and in the pipes and machinery. The variation in disturbances is so huge that no models exists and measuring is the only solution

CoSo has the specialists and the equipment to perform a full field survey and put the data in an understandable report, in which the advice is explained based on the measuring results and based on our experience in an industrial environment.

Services and After Sales

Wireless networks are very reliable, as long as the are implemented in the correct way. For WiFi networks, there are professional tools available to make a good diagnostics, which makes it possible to take preventive precautions. Wireless Sensor & Actuator networks are technological much more advanced compared to WiFi networks. Many problems can be tackled by them without human intervention and will not have any impact on the production. The networks can recover more than once without any impact, but this doesn’t mean you don’t have to act and solve the problem. There will come a moment that all network recources are blocked, because no proper actions have been taken.

Preventive maintenance

Maintenance is needed. It is recommended to check the network diagnostics on a regular basis. Based on the signal measurements and other results a proper action plan should be made and executed. It is also advisable to regularly check the radio spectrum. And of course you need to train the customer engineers from time to time.

Corrective maintenance

When the network is implemented in the right way and all precautions and procedures have been followed, the risk of a network failure is small. In case of a Wireless Sensor Network this chance is nearly zero; because you can implement a lot of redundant routes, have alternative communication channels etc. Our opinion is that this risk isn’t higher than on a wired network. Nevertheless, if precautions are not taken or when design mistakes have been made, failures are possible. CoSo offers both remote and local support 24 hours, 7 day a week.

Management and Technical Training

During our research on wireless technology for industrial applications we were confronted by a lack of confidence as well as a gap in the knowledge of this technology. Especially on the subject of wireless Sensor (& Actuators) networks we were confronted with lot of opinions without real technical background to support them. That’s why we have developed 2 training programs:

Management Training

The purpose of this training is to inform employees on a management level, without going into technical details, about the challenges and the risks, but also the opportunities of the wireless technology. After this training the manager should be able to speak, validate and make decisions based on facts and not based on emotions and rumours. You will understand the professional vocabulary of the engineers. You will be able to ask the right questions, to evaluate the risks and te be in control of the decisions and the project. The following topics will be handled:

  • Network security
  • Network reliability
  • Risks
  • Advantages and disadvantages
  • Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
  • hardware, software and system selection

Technical Training (2 days)

The technical training dives deeper into the technical aspects of the implementation and maintenance of a wireless network. Besides the topics of the management training, the following topics will be handled during the training:

  • Detection of rogue devices
  • Managing of the radio spectrum with the right tools and knowledge
  • Preventing problems by preventive maintenance
  • Implementing and maintaining a wireless network, including settings of routers, access points, firewalls en authentication server
  • Setting up rules in case of corrective maintenance.
  • OSI-model van ISO
  • Encryption setting.
  • Power saving settings of battery powers field equipment

It is a basic wireless network training which covers several technical aspects using wireless technology in an industrial environment. The training is intended for engineers with network, electronics or system maintenance background and a middle-plus or university education.
